Wix vs. a Custom Website: What Actually Matters for a Small Business

Wix isn’t bad. That’s worth saying up front, because most comparisons like this one are secretly sales pitches wearing a “fair and balanced” costume. Wix, Squarespace, and similar builders are genuinely good at what they’re built for. The question isn’t “which one is better”, it’s which one is better for your business, right now.

What Wix actually does well

It gets you online today. No waiting on a developer, no back-and-forth on revisions. Pick a template, swap in your content, publish.

It’s cheap and predictable. $16–$40/month, all-in, no surprise invoice for “one more round of changes.”

You control it completely. Want to change your hours or swap a photo at 9pm on a Sunday? Log in and do it. No email, no waiting.

For a business just getting started, testing an idea, or with genuinely simple needs, that’s a legitimately good deal. Anyone telling you Wix is always the wrong answer is selling something.

Where it starts to hurt

Performance. Builder platforms ship a lot of code your specific page doesn’t need: drag-and-drop editors, animation libraries, page-builder infrastructure. All of it exists because the same underlying engine has to support millions of different sites. That extra weight shows up as slower load times, which Google measures and factors into search rankings.

Everyone’s site looks like it came from the same catalog. Not because the templates are bad, but because thousands of other small businesses picked the same one. Visitors have seen that layout before, on someone else’s site.

SEO ceiling. Builders have gotten much better at basic SEO. Meta tags, sitemaps, that layer is mostly solved. What they can’t fix is the underlying page weight and code structure, which is a real (if not enormous) ranking factor, and one that compounds against you as the platform adds features over the years.

The “just one more change” tax. DIY only stays cheap if you actually have the time and patience to be your own web team indefinitely. A lot of small business owners start out excited to build it themselves and, eight months later, still haven’t fixed the broken image on the About page.

Static, custom-built sites (built with something like Astro rather than a page-builder) tend to load faster because there’s no drag-and-drop engine running underneath. The page you see is close to the actual code, not a rendered-on-the-fly assembly of editor components.

When Wix is the right call

• You’re testing a business idea and don’t want to commit yet
• You genuinely enjoy (or need) updating the site yourself, often
• Your budget is tight and $16/month matters more than the extras
• Your needs are simple: a page, a phone number, hours, a contact form

When it isn’t

• You’re a real, ongoing local business and your website is a legitimate part of how customers find and judge you
• Page speed and search visibility actually matter to your business (a restaurant, a contractor, a shop competing with others in your city)
• You’d rather hand off the website entirely and focus on running your business
